Astringent, demulcent, emollient, nutritive, and anti-inflammatory to mucous membranes. Traditionally used to treat scouring, gut ulceration, and gas it is credited with absorbing toxins from the gut, enhancing colonic bacteria, and balancing bacterial fermentation. Externally used as a poultice, either alone or with other herbs mixed in.
